Baby development from 0 to 6 months
When you have a baby that’s the most special feeling to become a mother. Everyday your little one seems to be changing and learning new skills to grow of course . Your baby grows and develops week by week after his/her birth.
Today in this post we will discuss about baby development month by month from newborn to 6 months of age. We will discuss all baby milestones in details, first we will discuss milestones upto 6 months and in my next posts, we will learn baby milestones till he/she becomes adult.
Factors affecting baby development

- Physical and psychological environment
- Emotional stimulation
Infancy and early childhood are the most crucial phases during which development takes place. There are many factors which delays baby development or baby milestones - we will discuss more about these factors later on. Let's start the today's topic.
Domain of development
Baby development is a complex process, however it is convenient to understand baby milestones under the following five domains:
Gross motor development
Fine motor skill development
Personal and social development and general understanding
Vision and hearing.
A. Gross motor development
Neck holding in supine position
In newborn the head completely lags behind and back is rounded.
The child has complete neck control by 20 weeks.
Neck holding in prone position
At 2 weeks, the baby lies on the bed with high pelvis and knees drawn up.
By 8 weeks face is lifted up at 45°.
By 12 week baby can lift his head above the horizontal plane.
At 6 months, baby can lift his head and greater part of the chest while supporting weight on the arms.
Between 4 and 6 months, baby learns to roll over, at first from back to side and then from back to stomach.
By the age of 8 months, baby crawls with abdomen on the ground and by 10 months, creeps means abdomen off the ground, with weight on knees and hands
At 5 months of age the child can sit with support of pillows.
Baby independently sits with his arms forward for support by the age of 6 to 7 months ( tripod or truly sitting with support)
Sitting without any support generally developed at around 8 months of age.
B. Fine motor development
Hand eye coordination
Between 12 and 20 weeks, the child observed his own hands very intently this is called hand regard .
At 3 to 4 month hands of the child come together in midline as he plays It is also called bidexterous grasp
C. Personal and social development and general understanding
The child intently watches his mother when she talked to him at the beginning of around 1 month.
He is start smiling back (social smile) when anyone talks to him or smiled at him by 6 to 8 weeks of age.
Soon after appearance of social smile at around 6 to 8 weeks, the child begins to vocalised with vowels sounds such as ‘ ah, uh’.
- At 3 to 4 months he squeals with delight and loughs loud.
- At 6 months of Age baby uses monosyllables like da, pa, pa, ma.
E. Vision and hearing
At birth a baby can fixate and follow a moving person or dangling ring held 8 to 10 inches away up to a range of 45 degree which increases to 90 degree by 4 weeks and 180 degree by 12 weeks .
At around 1 months the baby can fixate on his mother as she talks to him.
Binocular vision begins at around 6 weeks and is well established by 4 months.
By 3 to 4 months, the child turn his head towards the source of sound.
